Here's Corridors of Power with OpenAL Soft's HRTF through DSOAL. Never heard of it? Don't worry, neither have I. This is basically one of those games made in a free, drag-and-drop FPS creator back in 2003. However, Corridors of Power is different because it was made by the creator of the actual engine (A.P. Gardner) as a demo of its capabilities. Surprisingly enough, the engine was still being updated as recently as 2016. One look at the screenshots shows that it's still using stolen Quake 2 multiplayer models (including Jeff M. Garstecki's Waste and Fuel), so it brings to question what has actually been updated over the last 13 years.

The Retribution Engine's binaural audio is about as janky as everything else. Well, everything except the mouse input, which needs to be experienced to believe. The Retribution Engine does have accurate 3D positional audio and the doppler effect (1:23), but there's no vertical localization and there seems to be a severe problem where some sounds don't roll-off properly (6:14). The lack of music or any kind of ambience really drags Corridors of Power down, though. Come on, where's the freeform jazz or stolen Duke Nukem 3D midis?
