Minecraft: How to truly fix water flows [obsolete]
Update: Water behavior was changed in snapshot 13w03a (one of the snapshots leading up to 1.5). Now inflowing water won't hesitate to create a source block on top of an existing source block, if it would atop a solid block. That means you won't be able to create holes in the middle of the ocean anymore. Filling pools properly will be much easier, too.
A common solution seems to be to build a layer of solid blocks under the surface. I'll show you why that doesn't work perfectly.
After making the video I checked how harmful those underwater flows are. Turns out not very. In open water I couldn't find any difference. There is a difference where water joins air or blocks at any of its sides. It won't flow into surrounding air but will push you out. If there are surrounding blocks, the water will pull you down. Beware of that as it can be a drowning hazard. Shafts you dig at the bottom of a water body are particularly dangerous, so always fill those with source blocks.
