MiSTer FPGA - Alien vs. Predator (エイリアンVSプレデター) [2 Player] / Capcom CPS-2 Arcade
Had a two player session for AvP over Halloween weekend and finally just getting around to uploading it. Drinking was involved and neither of us are good at this one, but it's still a super-fun game. We picked the dynamic duo of Major D and P Hunter (lol) for this session. Previously I would always play as the predator characters since they had cool moves like the Blanka ball and shoto-style uppercuts. I'll try and revisit this one for a single player run after I've had a bit more practice. Lt. Kurosawa seems pretty great and I'll probably try her next.
Maj. D is an interesting character. He lacks a jump but gets a tackle attack instead, which can be modified into a crouching dash with multiple hits that combos into a jumping move where he gets an 8-way shot on the way down. I learned this while playing through on this run and he was quite a bit more enjoyable after getting the hang of this. At first I was accidentally hitting the jump button while trying to pick up items and not realizing his dash move was the jump, thinking I was hitting attack. The cool variety in characters is a standout element of this excellent beat 'em up. They all feel very unique and well thought out.
Audio-visual presentation is top-notch as per the norm for Capcom around this time. The early 90's solidified their place as the best in the business and Alien vs Predator is a standout even in 2021 when revisiting it. It's a cabinet that always drew crowds, even if they weren't playing. Just an awesome spectacle of an arcade game. It's very surprising that this didn't get ported to home platforms, but likely many concessions would have been needed, given the large amount of enemies and effects often on the screen at once.
