MiSTer FPGA - Golden Axe (ゴールデンアックス) [2 Player] / Sega System 16 Arcade
Released one year after Altered Beast (and even featuring a cameo from one of the enemies), Golden Axe is a legendary arcade game that you could find in every arcade it seemed. Over Halloween weekend I had a chance to play it with a buddy for the first time in decades.
First time using Tyris Flare for me, who has a rather lackluster attack range but the best magic in the game. Her special attack (Jump+Attack) seems pretty much useless and just adds a bit of flair to the character through the animation. My companion used my normal pick, Gilius Thunderhead. While not a very long game, its still a fun playthrough that is rather fair for an arcade game of this time period. Feels like if you get good enough at this one a 1cc for it is pretty well within reach, which is pretty rare for beat 'em up games.
Featuring impressive graphics for the time, this was a real spectacle when it released with its huge screen filling magic effects and sprites. It also has very fun gameplay for fans of beat 'em up games and memorable elements like the way your progress is drawn on the map screen in-between stages. Another small thing that stands out is the way Sega would let the ending tune keep playing as the intro loops after beating the game instead of abruptly cutting it off, much like Altered Beast did a year prior. Sega was pretty much the pinnacle of arcade experiences in the late 80's.
