MiSTer FPGA - Galaga (ギャラガ) / Namco Arcade [PB: 133,400]
When it comes to arcade shooters, Galaga is amongst the most legendary games ever to grace cabinets across the world. Hard to believe it's been 40 years since the release of this classic, but even today it holds up wonderfully in it's gameplay and design. This was also one of the first games to use full RGB color.
One of the major things that first stood out to me, along with the bright colors and excellent sound design, was the ship capture system that allowed you to essentially gamble one of your extra ships in an attempt to double your firepower. Not only a risky move because it doubles your hit box, but also the sequence of events required to achieve this taking precise firing upon a specific enemy to get your ship back. If you misjudge by a small amount, you could inadvertently end up blowing up your ship instead of getting it back. A true gamble and well worth going for to gain that extra firepower.
Midway made the smart move of licensing this game for circulation in the USA, and it's since become one of the most legendary arcade games of all-time.
In this video I get to stage 17 with one credit, which I've probably surpassed before when playing it, but is my current best-attempt when playing on MiSTer. I'll use this as a benchmark for future high score attempts when I return to this classic later on. There are some fun alternate versions/hacks I would like to show in future videos as well.
Thanks to the many folks who contributed to making this a reality in on MiSTer: Dar (original FPGA implementation), Daniel Wallner (T80/T80se - Z80 compatible CPU), Peter Wendrich (gen_ram.vhd), Sorgelig (port to MiSTer), Alan Steremberg (DIP switches & maintenance), JimmyStones (Hi-score saving & pause), and blackwine (Flip-screen, H/V-sync adjustments, full DIP switch mapping, support for nm51xx & low pass filters).
