MiSTer FPGA - Beavis and Butt-Head in Virtual Stupidity / PlayStation
JP-only release. Grab the English translation hack here: https://www.romhacking.net/translatio...
Surprisingly a very well made adventure game. I tried to show all of the easter egg sequences as well, besides the one at the beginning that just skips to the final cutscene. Excellent work by ICOM Simulations in developing this gem. It plays like a 3 hour episode of the show and is very well done.
Been wanting to record this one for a while, but the BETA PSX core has lacked proper overscan cropping options so I held off. The options still haven't been added (and may never with resource constraints), so I instead am using custom OBS cropping to show this game as it appears in its original form on CRT. Shadow masks are used to better show how it appears on CRT, and work very well here since the scenes have very low motion. I also think these look great in the FMV sections of the game. Very reminiscent of what I see on a CRT with the rounded pixel separation. The only thing I didn't mask is the right edge, so you can still see some noise in the Viacom logo at the start, but besides that the space is noise-free throughout the game.
The game itself is translated from the Japanese release, since it never saw a USA release on PlayStation- presumably for a number of reasons:
a) Political pressure brought on by frivolous lawsuits against the show (notice you never hear Beavis' signature "Fire, Fire!" line in this game, and instead he uses terms like "Burner, Burner!" and "Fryer, Fryer!" which indicates this was after a lawsuit where a parent blamed the burning of a house on the show, even though it turns out the child in question had never watched the show once. There are some over-the-top violent easter eggs in the game also which may have not passed review.
b) Sony America's focus on 3D-only games.
c) The waning of popularity for adventure games in general in the USA.
If you want to play the original, it was released for Windows 95 and should work on MiSTer's AO486 core. This is a more consistent experience since it doesn't have the Japanese dialogue left over in the patch (grunts from characters in Japanese still, as is all mini-game dialogue), and rarely some normal dialogue is misplaced and doesn't make sense with the patch.
The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.
