MiSTer FPGA - G-Darius (Gダライアス) [Route B-F-J-Q-Y] / PlayStation [BETA]
**NOTE** - For best result PLEASE WATCH FULLSCREEN IN 1080p60 QUALITY. This video uses advanced filtering which may cause excessive noise on any other display setting! I know this is releasing very soon after the previous G-Darius video, but ZUNTATA's excellent music was missing from the previous video & I wanted to show my latest filter recipe for the game.
This is the first home port of G-Darius from arcades, which IMO is one of the greatest SHMUP/STG of all-time. Taito made a graceful transition to 3D for Darius in this landmark title, and the results were simply stunning for their time and hold up wonderfully today as well.
Unfortunately, the game taxes the PSX hardware a bit hard at times and results in some heavy slowdown throughout the game.
You may get the urge to turn on the PSX core's "Data Cache" feature to speed up FPS- I strongly advise against this, as it really wrecks the balance of the game and makes some areas harder than the arcade even. If you want an extra challenge maybe give this a try.
Another thing I have to mention is the ending videos in this port- they are in *terrible* quality because they were converted to MPEG video from the original in-engine graphics. The result looks like someone pointed a 1996 video camera at a CRT and recorded. Reminiscent of what you would see with Sega CD FMV- just a really bad conversion with tons of noise.
It takes a lot of trial and error to see what will work with YouTube's strict 1080p encoder regarding scanlines and shadow masks. For these kinds of experiments I upload lossless video, and this one was nearly 30GB! These take a long time to upload on my rural internet connection, and makes experimentation a very time-consuming process. Even with all that work, it's impossible to capture in a video how good I can get games looking, with the recent filter advancements on MiSTer.
Please try these settings for yourself to experience them, and experiment a little to see how great this game looks in its original form. Feel free to comment here with any questions and suggestions, or reach out on Discord/Twitter! I'd love to hear what kinds of filter recipes folks are coming up with for these visually dense and stunning PS1 games.
The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.
