MiSTer FPGA - Contra (コントラ) [1cc] / Konami Arcade
After a couple hours of practice runs I was able to record my first 1cc for Contra arcade. It took a while to figure out a couple sections where it seemed like items don't consistently show up. Seems like you need to die to the second dude on the final stage to get the barrier in the section right after him, which is super-helpful to avoid dying at the first alien boss. I don't know how else to approach that fight without taking multiple deaths. Also had multiple instances in the 3D sections where I died trying to avoid picking up weapons. Probably best to just blaze through those sections and not worry about keeping the same weapon. Overall this was quite a bit easier than I thought it would be. Seems even easier than the NES version, though it's been a long while since I played that one.
Filtering in this video is a bit sharper than normal. I played on a rotated CRT while recording this, and one thing that always stood out about this game (and many vertical/TATE games in general) is how sharp they can appear on CRT. Vertical scanlines would have resulted in excessive noise in a predominantly horizontal scrolling game, so I avoided going for a more authentic look here. Adaptive scanlines seem to not work properly in Jotego's arcade cores, so your mileage may vary if you try going for a vertical scanline look when playing this game. To try it out, set the "vert" filter to your standard interpolation like gaussian sharp, and then apply the scanline filter as the "hori" option.
