MiSTer FPGA - Crystalis (ゴッド) [Part 1] / NES (Famicom)
A long-time favorite of mine since first playing it, Crystalis is Game of the Month for April 2022 on the official MiSTer Discord. It's been fun revisiting this ARPG classic with everyone on the server. This was one of the first Action-RPGs I experienced, along with Zelda/2 and Battle of Olympus.
In this video I show the first half of the game, up to the ocean section.
5x scaling is used to fill the screen while retaining a vertical integer ratio, and edge masking helps greatly in cleaning up the presentation on top of that. This was played on a CRT while recording via HDMI (as I do in most videos), and I was pleasantly surprised at how the edge masking helps the presentation on CRT as well, eliminating a great portion of the usual noise on the edges and giving a much cleaner image overall. I played with a component connection, but went for something more along the lines of S-Video quality as an intermediate step for the recording- having previously only played this via RF and Composite on a CRT. This is the best quality I have ever experienced in Crystalis.
Input feels exactly as I remember it as well, lagless and precise. Having been made by arcade legends SNK, you can feel they leaned towards more of an arcade feel with the controls, besides the constant/annoying item switching mechanic. For that reason, this is a really fun game to play with an arcade stick also IMO.
