MiSTer FPGA - Guwange (ぐわんげ) / Cave 68000 Arcade
This is my first-ever playthrough of Guwange, an awesome Cave arcade game that released in 1999. I noticed what looked like graphical glitching in a couple explosion effects, but besides that everything seems to be running well in this newly-released arcade core. The artwork is pretty insane in this one, kind of reminiscent of some AI created images I've seen recently. (Spider-Cat.. why not?!)
One thing I was not particularly a fan of here, is how damn noisy the screen constantly is, with your upgraded main weapon making it difficult to see bullets directly in front of you at times, and also some difficulty knowing which areas the character could walk on in a few of the stages. This makes the game a bit more of a memorization task than a reaction-shooter, like most bullet hell games, but in this one it hits a bit harder because of the added noise that's constantly on the screen. Two player must be pretty insane if the single player is already this noisy. The bullet slow-down mechanic is also kind of worrisome at first, because of how common it is to slow a group of bullets and release them alongside another set already on the screen and make what seems like an un-dodgeable blob from them. It's a memorization game where you need to know exactly when to use these abilities, to get clear of some sections. Neat gimmick, but not very friendly to new players at all.
I'm not a massive fan of bullet hell shooters but have definitely enjoyed my time with this one, and will be returning for follow-up videos and maybe some livestreams once I have a bit more practice at it. I don't copy/research existing runs or superplays for my videos, so a game like this could take a while to get even semi-decent at, but that just means I'll be coming back to it for many years to learn more.
