MiSTer FPGA - R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 - Demo Loop & GP Hard [Wheel & Pedals 16x9] / PlayStation
Follow-up to my previous R4 video ( • MiSTer FPGA - R4: Ridge Racer Type ... ) but this time with filtering that is closer to an s-video style image. Integer scaling is used to significantly reduce the visual noise after YouTube re-compresses the video, but there is still some occasional break-up in darker areas and the dithered sky patterns. Intro video is 4:3 and then I switch to 16x9 for the following demo loop edit and GP, which is played on a harder setting this time with the combination of the Italian racing team and French automobile manufacturer. I tried to focus on tighter racing lines compared to my last video, but with the faster car selection and harder opponent AI this led to making quite a few more mistakes than before. Like in the last video, I'm using a Thrustmaster T300RS racing wheel & pedals for control.
Proper wheel configuration with T300RS:
Tap D-pad Left + Mode on wheel until light blinks only once (270 degree mode)
P1 Input: NegCon-Wheel
In-game options: NegCon control type: A // Steering Play: 3mm // Max Rotation: 45 Degrees

Anyone else with driving wheels- I strongly suggest you give them a try on MiSTer and see what works and what doesn't. Devs are working on this currently so it's a good time to "strike while the iron is hot" and get your issue reports in regarding compatibility.
The widescreen hack also gives a noticeably larger FOV when playing this game on a CRT, though the aspect ratio will be incorrect.
The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.

PSX core 5-11-2022 build - R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (リッジレーサータイプ4)
Filter Hori: Gaussian Sharp 55 // Filter Vert: Scanlines - Adaptive\50_90_NB
Shadow Mask: Aperture Grille (No Scanlines)
If using fullscreen scaling instead of integer, use Gaussian Sharp 60 for a similar look.
If you want a more composite-style look without increasing the blur level, don't use a shadow mask.
Core Options Control: NegCon-Wheel // Widescreen Hack: 16x9
In-game options NegCon control type: A // Steering Play: 3mm // Max Rotation: 45 Degrees
Played using a Thrustmaster T300RS racing wheel/pedals with 1ms USB polling.
Wheel Setting: 270 Degree Range
Video: Integer scaled to 1080p // HDMI to Datapath e1s capture card

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
