MiSTer FPGA - Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom [2 Player] / Capcom CPS-2 Arcade [BETA]
The Dungeons & Dragons arcade beat 'em up's by Capcom are some of my favorites in the genre. A nice departure from the normal formula, the game includes an item and magic system, along with 4-player co-op. In this video I play through as the Cleric, with my buddy playing as Dwarf. There is currently no attract mode sound in the beta, so its silent through the title/demo/intro.
We took the optional dragon fight to show that off, though we got brutalized in the process. This is a *very* tough game, especially compared to other Capcom beat 'em up's at the time, and prior. The dragon fight alone can cost you several dollars in the arcade.
Items are a mixed bag, with most of them bordering on useless like the hammers which are really only good against flying enemies, and the oil pots, which are only useful against a single boss as far as I can tell, and have an abysmal range that often requires spamming multiple ones to be effective.
Controls are unique in this one, with additional buttons for item selection and usage, along with the normal attack/jump. The jump button also allows you to crouch if you hold down before holding the button, and includes a special charge attack if you duck and then press down-forward+attack immediately afterwards. If you repeatedly tap down-forward or down-back and jump at the same time, you will do a slide or roll for evasion. Enemies can be hit while on the ground with certain standing attacks or by jumping on them and pressing down+attack. Blocking is done by holding attack and then immediately holding the back direction on the stick. These are not easy or intuitive to do when you first start playing and will take a bit of practice to integrate into your regular movements.
Give this one a try with a group if you can, as multiplayer co-op is definitely a strong element in this game. Cleric can use his healing spells to heal nearby allies, and also freeze enemies for attacks with his Hold spell and "Sticks to Snakes" enchantment, making him an essential co-op pick IMO. I didn't realize until after recording this video that the Cleric can heal others if you coordinate to stand close for it. No biggie, as you don't get much healing magic in the game anyways.
