MiSTer FPGA - Street Fighter (ストリートファイター) / Capcom Arcade
First time beating the original Street Fighter. This game is so cheap, lol. Enemies can kill you in like 8 frames of choppy-ass animation. Only learned how to do the special moves correctly because of a recent video by Justin Wong: https://youtu.be/AUvuXVbOZ3A . Check that out if you want to know the secret sauce. Still very difficult even if you know, especially the Sagat fight. Adon is usually a rat bastard also, but I took him out first try in this video. Feels good man.
I'm probably not going to play this one again, but am happy to have at least cleared it once. The only time I actually saw this in arcades, was in a little rec room in North Carolina. It was alongside Shadow Dancer, Ghouls n Ghosts, and the upright version of Outrun. Didn't have the huge buttons of the original, but instead had the traditional 6-button layout of SF2 with the chunky Happ buttons. I remember being hella frustrated trying to do anything in the game and returning to Outrun and Shadow Dancer instead. Cool to finally see all the artwork and the enemy progression in the game. This is the root of all fighting games, and its crazy how far the genre would evolve in the decade following it's release. It went on to be one of the highest grossing gaming franchises of all-time, all from the humble roots of this lovely and obtuse game. It's neat seeing staple ideas of the series form in this, like the invincibility of the dragon punch, allowing you to go through fireballs, and the basic Shoto moveset in general. The Tatsu can be used in the "blender" style that would later be seen in SF2: Turbo when Ken became more distinct. Positioning needs to be exact, but its cool to see on the rare occasion when you actually pull it off.
Compared to the shine of Capcom games to follow, its hard to imagine them releasing something that feels as broken as this game to the newcomer. The number of animation frames are laughable at times, and the controls just feel so unresponsive that reactions are pretty much off the table. It's all about prediction of enemy patterns and spamming out the appropriate move for the fight. Awesome to have the originator in FPGA form, and the game feels better than ever, even with its inherent shortcomings. Try again, kiddo! ^-^
