MiSTer FPGA - Wings / Amiga
** Note: Occasional noise in video is due to Youtube's re-encoding. Scanlines with solid colored areas create noise on youtube's encoder, usually dark greys being the worst. **
Amiga seems to have a large selection of flying games. Lots of sim-style experiences and a couple arcade-like games as well. Wings falls in the latter category, and is a very well made arcade style dogfighting game. It has multiple gameplay modes, with different perspectives to approach the battle from. This includes top-down bombing run type missions, and also isometric strafing run missions where you try to destroy troops and ground targets with the main machine gun. The mixed gameplay types are a very welcome addition to the standard dogfighting segments, and help keep the game feeling fresh and entertaining.
All of this takes place with a cinematic presentation, featuring great visuals and music to go along with the action. I really dig the pixel art animation of the Wright brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk in the intro. Great style in the graphics with a lot of care taken.
Another unique element of this game, is the seemingly-random mission structure every time you play, and having permadeath for your character. If you die, its back to the beginning of the game and into a random training mission to get started again. These are short and don't drag things down at all, but would be nice to skip after you've done them a bunch of times already. There is a default character on the roster that already has training complete, so perhaps just use that one to skip the training, after getting familiar with the 3 or 4 training missions it randomly gives you.
This game got a port/remake on Game Boy Advance, also titled "Wings", which was well received and updated some elements in the original. This version also adds system-link multiplayer for up to 4 players!

And in 2014, a "remastered" version of the game was released, after a successful kickstarter. It is simply called "Wings Remastered" and is available on Steam, Android and iOS. It's nice to be able to support some of the original devs with a modern version that can still be purchased. The remaster apparently turned out pretty good as well, by all accounts I've seen.

Another impressive game in the Amiga library. This is a relatively easy one to learn- give it a try if you want to experience something unique.
