MiSTer FPGA - Altered Beast (獣王記) [No Miss] / Famicom (NES)
0In anticipation of the arcade version coming to MiSTer *very* soon, I decided to play through the Famicom version of Altered Beast, which never saw a release outside of Japan. This one is notable because it adds stages and player transformations not seen in any other version.
Thanks to "Bag of Schmidt" on Discord for recommending this one. This is an easily accessible Japan-only release, since its an action game and all text is already in English besides the title.
The hitboxes are a bit wonky and take some getting used to, but this is something that the arcade version had issues with as well. Overall this was a fun playthrough that was pretty easy to learn and get a no-death clear on. If you want a further challenge, there is a hard mode unlocked when you beat the game. Might be a code or cheat to start on this more difficult level also.
This was a fun warm-up in anticipation of the full arcade game coming to MiSTer (in beta form, at least..) this Friday.
