MiSTer FPGA - Demons of Asteborg [Part 1] / Genesis (Mega Drive)
0This new 2021 Genesis/Mega Drive game just released a couple days ago, as the result of a successful Kickstarter back in 2019. It's a platforming hack and slash adventure that has elements reminiscent of Capcom arcade classics. I feel this one is best played with arcade stick, after trying a couple different controllers with it.
Artwork and music are very good. You can tell a lot of love went into the creation of the world and characters in this one. Great use of the Genesis/MD palette and sound hardware. There are some core design issues that bring down the overall experience, but not to the point that I wouldn't recommend it to fans of classic platforming action games. It is certainly a treat to see good quality games still being released on this classic console.

There is a demo ROM and the option to purchase Genesis/MD compatible carts on their website, and hopefully they will have a direct ROM purchase option there in the future as well:

MiSTer supported this on day one of it's release, while other commercial FPGA consoles and flash carts reportedly will not load it until their firmware is updated sometime in the future. This is due to the large ROM size using a special mapper that IIRC Pier Solar used similarly in the past. Thanks Kitrinx for getting that support in place years back, and making the mapper support robust enough that new titles could effortlessly work like this.
