MiSTer FPGA - V-Rally 3 [Two Player Rallycross & Rally] / Game Boy Advance
Back for some more rally racing action in one of my favorite GBA games, V-Rally 3.. only this time in multiplayer thanks for FPGAzumSpass' dual-screen core! My buddy played on CRT while I recorded and played from the half screen on HDMI. Audio options change through the video, so check the chapter markers for info on what is being used. There is some audio delay between systems that creates a bit of reverb for music in menus later on when using the split L/R audio option. It doesn't need to be synchronized in these parts and the audio is perfectly fine when actually racing.
This is the best multiplayer game I've tried on GBA so far. Both modes are fun to play with a buddy, and the laid back nature of the time trial rally mode means you can just race different cars and practice the same sections together. You can't actually hit the other player in rally mode- it's purely a time trial test with whatever cars you pick, not necessarily against eachother even, just to become more efficient with a particular car/track. These rally tracks are the most enjoyable part of the game, so make sure to give these a try in multiplayer! Unfortunately the rally stages do not progress automatically in two-player mode, so you will need to quit out after each section and then select the next section through the menus. Doesn't take long, but really makes you wish they would have just included a mode that allows both players to seamlessly go through the entire set of stages in a rally together.
With two displays set up and the L/R split audio option delivering isolated audio, you could essentially make a two player arcade racing style setup where each player has their own screen, all from the same little MiSTer FPGA device. Really a lot of unique and awesome experiences on GBA to try with this tech, and Game Boy/Color as well. This is the kind of feature that really pushes the boundaries of what is accessible on the system and makes new experiences available for everyone.
The GBA/GBA2P core was created by FPGAzumspass. He also recently released Atari Lynx & WonderSwan cores.
