MiSTer FPGA - Stuntman [Full Game + Multiplayer] / Game Boy Advance
This is an exhibition of the advancements in Velez & Dubail's 3D GBA engine after their previous release, V-Rally 3 - including multiplayer. This one took a *long* time to record, since the game itself is broken in ways. Still, I wanted to capture the extent of how far the dev team of Velez & Dubail would take things, after their previous work on GBA. They tried things that nobody else dared attempt on the system, and I find their work *very* interesting.
I decided to do an edited run throughout the entire game to show all the different stages and the replays for each completed section, so you can see multiple camera angles of this very ambitious 3D GBA game. Training missions are skipped at the beginning, since they are just portions of the larger missions you do afterwards. I rebooted after each fail to try and get the most money and earn the $5,000,000 car, but later found its unlocked in 'precision test' mode for free. 😩
Have you ever seen textures this wobbly before? I sure hadn't. Check out the way the walls warp during some of those replays when the camera is close to a wall and panning. This brings texture wobble to a whole new level compared to what you would see on a system like the PS1.
I wanted to give up in frustration many times when practicing this game. When I realized it had these broken-feeling elements to it, I decided to not waste viewers time with the dozens of repeated plays that result from this. The broken stuff I'm talking about seems to be the result of either engine limitations at the time or poor playtesting. The checkpoint system is broken on many stages. Often you'll get through a checkpoint barely in time, and even if you make it to the next one as quickly as possible there will be no way to get there within the limit. It's a waste of players' time as a result. Jumps are a requirement in the game and sometimes do random stuff because the script for them is not triggered correctly. Even when going as fast as possible, you sometimes might jump as if you were going very slow.
Tips: 90/180 degree turn moves require you to hold the handbrake button for the entire rotation. Don't just tap it for these. When running short on time, sometimes it's best to skip these.
A buddy joined for multiplayer at the end, after watching me do story mode- he played on CRT while I recorded both screens and played on HDMI, using the new two-player GBA core. It's his first time trying the game so it's stacked in my favor, but I wanted to show off at least a round of this mode with the new 2P core.
