MiSTer FPGA - Last Alert (レッドアラート) [1cc] / Turbografx CD (PC Engine CD)
Recommended by Hewhoisred in Discord many moons ago, I played through this when the core released and am finally revisiting it for a video now. The dialogue in this is just amazingly cheesy. It's like sitting through an entertainingly awful b-movie. "You're some WEIRDO; naming your helicopter!"
What's especially funny about this, is that the original Japanese version, "Red Alert", was actually praised for it's excellent voice acting at the time. This is the same kind of treatment that anime got in the 80's when it came to dubs, and one of the reasons many of us preferred subtitles. It's hard to focus on anything else when the acting is so obviously terrible.
As far as plot goes, you play as the bad-ass musclebound american, storming through various scenarios like some sort of prequel to the movie "Team America: World Police", all while accompanied by some hilarious dialogue and cutscenes that definitely have some questionable elements to them. A lot of this shit would not fly in a modern game, like the white actor who is voicing the Chinese boss, Mr. Lee. Also notable is that during the credit roll, none of the voice actors are presented with a last name. It's just "Mark", "Rebecca", "Jim" etc..
As far as gameplay goes, this is probably the strongest and weakest point of the game, depending on how much you appreciate the aforementioned dialogue wonkiness. Like most PC Engine games are known for, the game has lightning-fast responsiveness, which just gives it a great feel. Even with the somewhat lackluster boss fights, the sheer feel of control with the layout is just excellent and keeps you engaged in the game if you're a top-down shooter fan.
The weakest element in the game has to do with the challenge and balancing of the bosses. They did not balance things correctly. To augment this before shipping the game, they added arbitrary time limits for every stage, and while this isn't an issue at the beginning, at the final stages this becomes the most challenging factor in the game. You need to just rush through these areas and know beforehand how to take out the boss quickly or you will just run out of time and die. Very poor design there. The boss fights could have easily been improved upon and made into longer battles.
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES and Sega CD cores, and is now currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
