MiSTer FPGA - Super R-Type [No Miss SA-1] / SNES (Super Famicom)
SA-1 Speed Fix Patch by Vitor Vilela: https://github.com/VitorVilela7/SA1-Root
While trying to record a 1cc video for this game, I ended up getting a No Miss (no death) loop on the default difficulty! Took a lot of tries throughout the week to get this one, but I found this to be a really fun game, especially with the slowdown removed. Besides the occasional sprite flicker, the game feels like it's arcade-quality now. Difficulty is definitely increased with the lack of slowdown. I tried the original game and it is a night and day difference.
I first tried to make some progress in this game almost exactly a week ago, on a livestream showing off 5x integer scaling on MiSTer.. and couldn't even make it past the 4th stage with infinite continues. ( https://youtu.be/apNB4gVCv8k?t=771 ) It's the type of game where one small mistake results in death, like R-Type is known for. This one is more brutal than most in the series, because it lacks checkpoints and starts you at the beginning of the stage for one mistake, even at bosses.
Previous run with 5x integer scaling, and my first 1cc for the game: https://youtu.be/cu3spcMoSMA
The soundtrack to this one is wonderful. Luckily they included a BGM menu (hit select on the title screen), so you can easily listen to the soundtrack in full.
Vitor Vilela is the author of the SA-1 speedfix patches/romhacks for SNES, and has made progress on many games already! From Gradius 3 to Contra 3, and many others.. he has been working to make the SNES library feel much better and eliminate some notorious cases of slowdown that hindered games on the platform for decades now. Re-production carts are even being made with his SA-1 fixes in place. Some of these hacks will IMO be the definitive version to play, going forward. That said- games like Gradius III are so difficult with the speed fix in place, that the original will definitely still be desirable for many.
