MiSTer FPGA - Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) [Part 1] / SNES (Super Famicom)
Part 1: Gathering the party and heading to the Witch's Castle.

Love it or hate it, Secret of Mana is a rather unique game for the SNES, starting its life as a game meant for the ill-fated CD addon that Nintendo repeatedly fumbled with up until the 2000's when they finally adopted optical media as a storage medium.
The result is that the game is unfinished, with characters left undeveloped and the story loosely woven together through the events that take place in the game. Most folks who dislike this game say it's because of the weird combat system, that requires you to wait until your attack is powered up and kind of functions like an ATB bar (from Final Fantasy), but in a realtime action system. Characters can only attack with full power when the bar is filled up and you hear the "beep" sound. You can still spam all the magic you want with the other characters, without waiting for any bars to fill up. Only MP is a concern there, and a good way to power-level your magic is just to burn a bunch of spells before you go to an inn to rest/save. With how unfinished the end-game is in this, you won't really need any magic to be fully powered up. Medium levels will carry you through pretty much the entire game.
I'm using a romhack that combines a bunch of beneficial things together into one, and IMO is the definitive version of the game to play nowadays. It not only fixes up the script a bit, but also adds in a high-resolution font for text, restores the original title screen instead of the zoomed-in mess we got with the western release, and removes censorship as well!
Be aware that if you're gonna use any guide for the game, that this romhack will confuse you with its different item names. This is one area where I think they should have stayed with the original wording just for the sake of non-confusion.
Once you unlock the other two characters in the game, you can play this one as a two/three player co-op ARPG. If you have someone who is willing to give this a go with you, and doesn't mind the wait-to-attack mechanic in the game-- this one can be quite fun with a friend or two!
