NEW Roguelike Alert! Deck of Souls is a Masterclass in the Genre!
Deck of Souls is an exciting new roguelike deck-building game with a twist of Souls-like difficulty. It offers a unique and engaging narrative that sets it apart from typical adventure games, placing you in the shoes of Tohuel, the “Loop Master.” The story strikes a balance between serious themes and delightful comedic moments, with clever references that land well, even for those who don't recognize them.
On your first run, you begin as the Divine Knight, but as you progress, you can unlock two additional classes: the Holy Lich and Saint Talon. Each class comes with its own set of cards, creating distinct playstyles. The Divine Knight is more straightforward, focusing on heavy attacks, while the Holy Lich requires careful planning, using magic as a weapon. The game also features neutral cards that any class can use, adding to the strategic depth.
One standout feature is the Moral Decision system. At key points in the game, you're forced to make difficult choices, weighing the consequences of your actions. Will you pursue personal gain or align with others? Your decisions shape the course of your journey and influence the outcome of your run.
In addition to acquiring cards, you can enhance your strength through accessories, armor, and weapons, which you can find, purchase, or imbue with boss souls for powerful passives. These items can drastically change your playstyle and make each run feel fresh. Gear is important, but remember, cards are king.
The graphics in Deck of Souls are deceptively charming. Initially, I was unsure about the style, but the beautifully crafted sprites and unsettling designs grew on me. The backgrounds are detailed, though I would have liked a bit more variety in the locales. Despite this, the environments offer enough visual interest to keep things engaging.
Each class feels distinct, and while your gear doesn't affect your physical appearance, the designs of the items are impressive and influence gameplay in meaningful ways.
Overall, Deck of Souls is a well-crafted, fun, and engaging experience. With a unique story, humor, solid gameplay, and great graphics, it’s a game well worth its humble asking price. Hope you enjoy my video!
