Pac-Man World 2 (Low%) - Yellow Pac-Marine
Yellow Pac-Marine completed with 40%, 0 points. Though we collected nothing in the entire level, the game automatically awards the player 40% when all pac-dots are collected. And though there were none on this level, it treats that as all being collected... for some reason. Anyway, the hardest part about low%ing this level is actually avoiding death. This video shows how to do that quite well by *not getting hit a single time!* There's quite a bit to discuss here, so I'll break down how to avoid mines, shark subs, and the ghost crabs.
Individual mines are easy and self-explanatory as far as avoidance goes, except when they come in a giant grid pattern. To avoid the mine grids, just move all the way to the right side of the screen, and you'll avoid them every time (ex. 3:18).
The most reliable way to avoid the torpedoes from the shark subs is to move to the bottom margin of the screen. This way, you get the best view of the torpedo trajectories, and you can avoid them with a higher success rate. Try not to move vertically in these sections, as torpedoes can actually hit Pac-Man when he's directly above or below one. On the PC version, these guys can be taken out by them crashing into pipes, as they'll instantly die then. But on the Gamecube version, they're invincible to pipes! So on that version, they basically follow you around for the entire level. This makes the level insanely hard, and nearly impossible to complete without taking a couple deaths. Hopefully this video can show you how to effectively avoid them at least some of the time (ex. 3:31).
Finally, the ghost crabs. Sometimes, on the horizontal pipes, two crabs will spawn, and sometimes one (determined randomly). If there's one, just move to the opposite side of the crab and you'll get past it super easy. Now when there's two, know that one crab fires a torpedo, and the other will lunge at you (which side does which also determined randomly). To know how to avoid them, you actually need to take note of the pipe's texture. Observe the horizontal pipe that appears at 4:08, and the one immediately following. Notice the difference in texture? The first pipe is smoothed out, while the second is more variable in diameter across its length. Ok, so if you come up to a pipe that has a smooth texture and two crabs, go to the top center of the screen. Wait for one crab to fire its torpedo, and immediately hold up and the direction towards the crab that shot the torpedo. You should go above the torpedo crab, and the lunging crab should miss (ex. 4:34, 4:57, 7:33, 7:42). Now, when you see the jagged-edged pipe, immediately start moving to the bottom center of the screen. After the torpedo crab shoots, go *under* the pipe this time, beneath the torpedo crab, and you will avoid getting damaged. Assuming you go through this level deathless, you will only encounter this pipe type once, and it is the second pipe at 4:09. Fortunately for me, I didn't have to deal with the going-under BS, as only one crab spawned there. As far as an explanation, it's possible that the jagged-textured pipe is placed higher than the smooth-textured pipes, rendering it too high for Pac-Man to pass above a ghost crab, yet also high enough for him to be able to pass under without getting hit for once.
This video series will basically serve as a guide for the Low% speedrunning category. All that is required for that is to collect the least fruit and pac-dots possible. For added challenge however, I will also be minimizing score, extra lives, health wedges, power-ups, checkpoints, and etc collected.
