Pak Attack: Doom Tintin Jam (2020) + zigisp2 (2022) [BQTN 155 | PC w/ Quakespasm]
I had passed over the Doom Tintin jam a couple of times, and figured with all the recognizable names in it and all of the other Doom-themed (including a few Doom 3 themed) maps I've played, I ought to give it a look.
It definitely doesn't feel like it stands the test of time as well as some other recent paks, but it was still an interesting run. Greenwood's (1:45:41) and Chris Holden's (2:16:51) maps stand out the most; the latter is seemingly the only map that chose to go after Doom 3's hell aesthetic rather than techbase. Rooster's map (28:49) has some interesting concepts, but is brutally unbalanced in practice. I was surprised by ShadesMaster's map (9:16) in how many points of no return it had, and Shades himself commented that he definitely wouldn't do that in a map nowadays. Pinchy's map (1:14:22) impressed me moreso in how far he's come since, as this map lists triple the build time of his CTSJ2 map, which makes the latter seem all the more remarkable.
I threw in Zigi's Disposal of Otherworldly Monsters (2:59:45) at the end of this session as I still had time to play with, and it seemed like a sensible segue. I first caught wind of this on twitter a couple of months ago and knew I would want to play it, especially in anticipation of The Absolution. It certainly nails plenty of Doom notes (including one surprise enemy modification) but it's also quite the gauntlet, so I'm expecting to have my work cut out for me when The Absolution comes out. I'm just praying that won't use SMEJ2 progs...
