Pak Attack: SM206: Prototype Textures (2020) [BQTN 159 | PC w/ Quakespasm/vkQuake]
I added the 3 prototype texture jams to my list after catching a glimpse of the third one on ComfyByTheFire's Twitch channel. Prior to this, my only exposure to this texture set was Yoder's toybox pak, and I was very curious to see what various directions mappers would take this in.
00:00 - Introduction & start map
04:08 - Hexagoner by Arkii
We start off on a map with an extremely unique and interesting aesthetic unlike anything else in this jam (and unlike anything I expected out of it). Not the strongest in terms of gameplay, but certainly memorable in appearance.
10:14 - Designs on Jerry by Burnham
I appreciate that someone went for a mouse's perspective in this jam, as it seems like the perfect opportunity to pull it off.
24:12 - Clear Conflict by Chris Holden
This felt more like an "unfinished" traditional Quake map that could've fit a number of texture themes, partly due to how it employed light and shadows, and partly due to the monochrome nature of the entire map as opposed to many of the others.
35:25 - Cream Sickle
This DM/SP level practically feels like a Qonquer map, comprising multiple waves of horde combat and revealing new supplies in between each of them.
59:14 - The Fall of Demophon by Mazu
Easily (and unsurprisingly) one of the most detailed maps in the set in terms of level design and geometry, and of course with no shortage of crates and invitations for slope jumps. The chamber right before the end of the map is unexpectedly breathtaking given the texture set's limitations... and the "boss" is surprisingly hilarious.
1:45:14 - Not A Deathmatch Level by KONAir
It's one thing to end up cutting corners for a speedmap pack, but having no lighting in your map whatsoever seems like a step too far...
1:54:09 - P206 by Omni
An interesting map with 2 sequences of 2 rooms (each based around aquiring then using one of the two keys).
2:01:46 - Honeytech by Pinchy
This isn't my favorite in terms of gameplay, but it is hands-down the pak's winner in terms of detail work, because it compensates for the lack of detail in textures with some incredibly well-done geometric details instead, giving it legitimate techbase vibes.
2:11:24 - Prototype Map dot map by Quasiotter
Quasiotter always likes to do experimental things, and this time around we have a wario-ware-esque series of challenges requiring quick thinking. Unfortunately it also seems to require playing with fullbright enabled, which I didn't realize until too late for one challenge in particular.
2:14:54 - Untitled by Schnedwob
Short map with a sort-of-experimental and amusing final objective (one aspect of which felt a bit Smilecythe-esque).
2:21:38 - Run-Quad-Run by Voidforce
Voidforce's first map, with some looming arenas, interesting lighting, and several quads, some of which I felt I picked up at probably the most inopportune times.
2:31:47 - Lights Out by Yoder
This one had me worried given I'd already encountered 2 other maps with zero lighting, but no, this one actually uses lighting (or lack thereof) for effect. It also has some hilarious-but-terrifying steamroller trains.
2:40:49 - Asparagus by Zigi
Another solid map with interesting design, though perhaps feeling somewhat oversized in some areas.
