Control part 1: This Oldest House (PC / Ultimate Edition)
I'm long overdue to play this game, and it's particularly relevant now as required reading before playing the Quake Brutalist Jam that recently released. It also seems like an appropriate enough game for the month of October, what with the whole paranormal thriller setting.
Having played Max Payne in 2020, I had some idea of what to expect in terms of gameplay, but I've been curious as to what breadth of systems would be applied atop the third-person action shooter base, and particularly interested to see why some folks have tossed the word "metroidvania" around in regard to this game, because I'm certainly a fan of those.
The map has unfortunately been one of the pain points early on - it's clear that it reflects different elevations, but sometimes it can be confusing how to get from point A to point B, and I swear at one point it highlighted a place I'd already been as my next destination which seemed blatantly wrong. Fortunately. areas so far have also had plenty of signage, which has helped to pick up the slack.
The game has wasted no time giving us progression, but so far it's come in the form of several security clearance upgrades (basically key cards) which I'd hardly describe as metroidvania-esque. It's also made it abundantly clear, however, that we've barely scratched the surface in terms of just how much there is to explore in the Oldest House, so there's plenty of opportunity for more interesting forms of progression, since it seems like we might run out of security clearance levels pretty quickly.
