After getting five Gym Badges, the next place I have to access is Canalave City, but that can wait. What I do in this video is explore some past areas with the use of Surf, and one of them is south of Sandgem Town, and heading to a place known as Ramanas Park, and there are some Trainers on the routes to there.

As for the rest of the description, I recommend watching the full video before reading past this point of the description

This is an optional area, south of Sandgem Town is some water routes, so those are Routes 219, 220, and 221, and one thing I didn't like about Surf in the original games was that you went very slow, they fixed the Surf speed in Platinum. There are some Trainers on that route that use Water-type Pokémon, and there are some new encounters I want to go over. The first one is Tentacool, a Water/Poison-type Pokémon with good Special Defense, and very rarely, unless you are using a Repel and have Pokémon above level 30, but below level 40, you can find its evolved form Tentacruel. Tentacool does have Bubble Beam and Hex the moment you catch it, but Tentacruel at Level 40 have Poison Jab. Tentacruel does have solid stats, and it tends to prefer Special moves, like Surf, Sludge Bomb, Giga Drain, Ice Beam, and Dazzling Gleam, it cannot learn Toxic in this game, despite being a Poison-type Pokémon. It is a good option if you are in need of a Water-type Pokémon to use for your team, and once you get your seventh Gym Badge, you can find Tentacool and Tentacruel in the Grand Underground where they can know moves like Knock Off, Haze, Aqua Ring, Mirror Coat, Confuse Ray, or Muddy Water.
You can also find Pelipper on this route as well, and if you didn't get a good Wingull, the good thing is you know that Pelipper has Drizzle once you encounter it, because with Wingull, it has Hydration, and it might take some tries to get a Wingull with Hydration, whereas with Pelipper, you know it has Drizzle because it activates right away. Pelipper can relearn Air Slash, and it does get some good TM moves like Surf and Ice Beam, so it can be a good Pokémon to use.
There are some hidden items on the routes, and you can get a Splash Plate, which powers up Water-type moves, and for some reason there is one Swimmer that uses a Medicham, and I did read that she is likely a reference to Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, which is the Pokémon Movie that had Manaphy in it, and she did have a Buizel, which I remember was in that movie as well.
Next is Route 221, and the Fisherman there has a Finneon, which you can catch with the Good Rod, and there is one Trainer that you might want to fight against, it is the female Ace Trainer that uses a Cherrim, she is one of two Trainers in this game that uses Cherrim, and both these Trainers are in optional areas, so you will want to come to this area or the other area to see Cherrim for your Pokédex.
The new encounters aren't anything new, they are just evolved form of Pokémon that were previously accessible, first is Skuntank, which is only in Brilliant Diamond, and you can reteach Flamethrower to it, and it has very good stats all around, and it learns Night Slash through level up, so it can be a good choice if you didn't feel like Stunky was that helpful early on in the game, and you can find Skuntank in the Grand Underground. The other one is Gastrodon, this was another Pokémon that you can find in the Grand Underground, and now you can find it on this route, Water/Ground is a good type combo, and I recommend Storm Drain on Gastrodon if you want to use one.
For items you can pick up, there is the TM for X-Scissor, a Physical Bug-type move that a lot of Pokémon can learn, Vespiquen, Toxicroak, Crobat, and a few other Pokémon can learn that move. You can get a Pure Incense, which when given to Chimecho, allows you to get Chingling Eggs from the Pokémon Nursery. In one house, talk to the man there and show him a Pokémon of the level he wants to see, and he gives you a Black Belt, Expert Belt, or Focus Sash, and you can do this daily, and those are some good items that are worth picking up, the Black Belt boosts the power of Fighting-type moves, the Expert Belt boosts the power of super effective moves by 20%, and the Focus Sash ensures that you survive an attack that would have taken out your Pokémon in one hit.
At the end of Route 221 is Ramanas Park, and it is not accessible until you have obtained the National Dex, so that is not until after completing the game and at least seeing every Pokémon in the Sinnoh Dex, in the original games, it used to be called Pal Park, and this was where you would go to obtain Pokémon that you transferred over from the GBA games.
