This week for Surprise Trade, I will be trading Seviper, and this is not a version exclusive Pokémon, even though it was the counterpart to Zangoose back in Generation 3. I usually breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, I went for Naive for the Nature, this was the best I could go with as Seviper is not that good in the competitive scene, this Pokémon really needs an evolution. I do have the Hidden Ability of Infiltrator on some of them, but then again I am sure those are for the Hidden Ability collectors out there.
The Egg moves I went with were Night Slash, Final Gambit, Switcheroo, and Stockpile, it does get Body Slam, Scary Face, Spit Up, Swallow, and Assurance for the rest of its Egg Moves, but I went with the ones that stood out, Body Slam and Scary Face are TM moves Seviper can learn. To list the Pokémon that learn those moves out of the ones I went with, Night Slash can be learned from Weavile, Zoroark, Meowscarada, and a few other Pokémon, it can get Final Gambit from the Mankey line and Lucario, Switcheroo from Persian, Delphox, and Grafaiai, and it can learn Stockpile from the Skwovet line and Komala.
Next is level up moves, Seviper can learn Wrap, Swagger, Bite, Lick, Poison Tail, Feint, Screech, Glare, Poison Fang, Venoshock, Gastro Acid, Poison Jab, Haze, Crunch, Belch, Coil, and Sludge Bomb, Poison Tail was the signature move for Seviper back in Generation 3, and it can learn Night Slash and Swords Dance as level up moves in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and it can get those in this game, Night Slash as an Egg Move, and Swords Dance through TM.
For TM moves Seviper can learn, it can get Fire Fang, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Acid Spray, Thief, Trailblaze, Pounce, Bulldoze, Snarl, Dig, Brick Break, Zen Headbutt, Psychic Fangs, Body Slam, Seed Bomb, Taunt, Swords Dance, Dark Pulse, Iron Head, Gunk Shot, X-Scissor, Giga Drain, Flamethrower, Reversal, Earthquake, Giga Impact, Hyper Beam, and Tera Blast.
This Pokémon is really hard to use in online battles, and you are better off with other Pokémon than using Seviper, while it has base 100 in both Attack and Special Attack, and it can learn moves like Earthquake, Flamethrower, Giga Drain, and many other moves, and it can even use Coil and Swords Dance to boost its stats, the rest of its stats are below average, making it not worth using. I am sure there are players that are making use of Seviper in online battles, usually the ones that like to use Pokémon that are under used, or rarely used, and while I do tend to give these kinds of Pokémon a chance, Seviper is one that I find is outclassed by better Pokémon. Seviper can make use of Switcheroo with the Choice Scarf or Lagging Tail, but other Pokémon can do it much better, it does get Glare, but there's not much reason to use it over Sandaconda or Dudunsparce. Seviper is never used in Double Battles, if a Pokémon doesn't have good Speed or defensive stats, there is no point in using the Pokémon, because Speed is a very important stat for most Pokémon, and Seviper is not slow enough for Trick Room. If you want to use a Poison-type Pokémon, Sneasler is the best choice there is, Clodsire, Toxapex, and Galarian Slowking are solid defensive options, Glimmora and Overqwil can set up entry hazards, and there are other good choices, like Toxtricity, Gengar, Iron Moth, and even Salazzle.
Seviper is at least decent when going through the main story, and it even faces competition with other Poison-type Pokémon, but at least it has good attacking stats to put to work and access to moves like Poison Jab and Crunch for level up moves, and some good TM options like Flamethrower, Earthquake, Giga Drain, Psychic Fangs, X-Scissor, and Brick Break. The only hope for Seviper is if that Pokémon ever does get an evolution, but that would also mean its counterpart Zangoose does get an evolution as well, and at least Zangoose is a decent Pokémon in online battles, even if there are better Normal-type Pokémon to use.
