This is Project Bounty by Harry Gibson, an indie hack-and-slash running on Unreal Engine 4 using X3DAudio HRTF [IRC_1037]. I've been saving this video for a long time, because in my opinion this is the very best "Unreal Engine" tagged game that itch.io has to offer. Using the Paragon assets, it creates a visually-stunning cyberpunk world with intense action reminiscent of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. The combat is satisfying and the boss, when not glitching up, is really tricky on the first run. The binaural audio effect is also surprisingly good and much better than the DMC4 video I recorded a while back.
Of course, the best UE4 game on itch.io is not exempt from criticism. What's the most important part of a character action game? 100% precise controls, of course. Project Bounty's biggest problem is that its controls, while tight for itch.io's low standards, are just not smooth enough to give you total control. One part of this comes from the targeting mechanic that's just not snappy or accurate enough for this genre. The other part is that it uses Dark Souls' control scheme which just isn't conducive to a genre that's fast and dependent on combo execution. Also, the hit detection is alright for the enemies, but it's oddly floaty for the player and often damages you even when enemies don't even hit (2:43 and 3:01). This odd hit detection makes using the special moves more trouble than they're worth due to their long wind-up times.
The good news is that all this stuff can be chalked up as an early alpha build. If there was ever a game I wanted to succeed from the Sturgeon's Law pit that is itch.io, it's Project Bounty. I wish Harry Gibson the best of luck in his future career.
