A nostalgia for most of the late 90's grown-ups, MegaMan Legends was a well-made game, rich in story and popular in the consoles. While it wasn't quite sure if the Game was better on the PC, the PC port was the rarest version among N64 and PS1 for being 2 years late. Well, it was still better than never, and QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx handsomely restores the Game to perfection in "pristine condition" across Linux, Windows and macOS and playing with QEMU USB Gamepad delivers similar console experience.

QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx support on Apple Silicon macOS has finally caught up with Linux/Windows by supporting Apple OpenGL 4.1 for WineD3D. While this is still far from the standard OpenGL 4.6 on Linux/Windows, it is the highest and final OpenGL version available on macOS. More future-proof for WineD3D as it has been optimized for OpenGL 3.2+ core profile/GLSL since version 4.0.

However, not every games would stand to benefit from higher OpenGL version on macOS, some may even suffer significant performance loss and unplayable when WineD3D switched to Apple OpenGL 4.1 due to the way Apple enforced legacy deprecation on forward-compatible 4.1 core profile. There are also several caveats for WineD3D to be able to negotiate for Apple OpenGL 4.1 due to the limitation of QEMU SDL2 plumbing. Once WineD3D goes for Apple OpenGL 4.1, QEMU 2D display sharing is disabled. Many games require 2D display for configuration dialogs or video cutscenes. MegaMan Legends PC was selected as the showcase because it renders all cutscenes in 3D.

As for the story on qemu-3dfx, OpenGL support for macOS is now complete. OpenGL 4.1 is the end of road on macOS. Nevertheless, it was hoped that having OpenGL 4.1 ready would help in future WineD3D compatibility for playing Good Old Windows games on macOS.
