QEMU USB Gamepad Demo with LucasArts STAR WARS: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter 3D (1998)
"Calling all STAR fighters! The TIEs are wrecking our hulls! The Rebels are split among mainline and forks while the mainline dying a slow death. Using humor and humiliation TheEMPIRE seeks to impose a NEW ORDER."
LucasArts STAR WARS X-Wing, TIE Fighter and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter original DOS series were among the BEST 90's STAR WARS games. They went through upgrades from the 486-friendly DOS VGA to Pentium-powered SVGA graphics and eventually the Windows versions with hardware accelerated 3D graphics. Though the textures/graphics have aged, the FUN of the games remain til today and popular among retro gamers. However, the mandatory requirement of Joystick for the Windows versions had been a let-down for many who had played and preferred the old-school keyboard & mouse mechanics of the original DOS series. Well, here we got an answer, just play them from QEMU Virtual Machine. Those are very old games with early DirectX 3D implementation that would not work on modern machines. QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx offers USB Gamepad implementation capable of retrofit the old-school controls left out by the Windows versions.
The Games have modest CPU requirements, no native high-res rendering, after all over 20 years had passed since the original DOS series. It is easily an all-time 30 FPS locked for QEMU regardless of virtualization and up-stretch rendering at *ANY* resolution on modern display. Contrary to "the other camp" BIG JOKES & **BS** about accurate, period-correct Voodoo and PC emulation, they are really trash & useless for playing any Windows games with 3D acceleration, even for games that had aged over 20 years. The requirement for Joystick and doing it with poll-based game port emulation would be another blow to their CPU-hungry emulation at input latency.
The LucasArts STAR WARS Windows re-releases with 3D acceleration are notoriously among the many difficult games to get hardware 3D acceleration right. Even GOG had decided to remove hardware 3D acceleration for the copies they sold. Many PC games guides/wiki's just tell to play in software rendering. For QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx, they are preserved in "pristine condition" along with hardware 3D acceleration. So for STAR WARS fans who wish to relive the nostalgic memories from STAR WARS fantasies in PC games, either as Rebel STAR Fighter or Imperial TIE Fighter, QEMU Virtual Machine is the ultimate retro gaming platform that delivers superb quality & game experience, across Linux, Windows and Apple Silicon macOS.
