1,415In another big week for XR, Meta continues shaping the future of spatial computing with both hardware advances and software upgrades. A newly published research paper reveals more about Meta’s EMG wristband, a wearable that could allow for intuitive, low-effort gesture control — without cameras or buttons. At the same time, Quest headsets are getting more independent, with a new Android-based file manager app now allowing users to install APKs directly in-headset without a PC.
Sales of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are also on the rise, reportedly tripling in the first half of 2025 — further reinforcing Meta’s commitment to the smart eyewear market. On the user experience side, the company has released new insights suggesting that the ideal VR session lasts between 20 to 40 minutes, shaping how developers and users alike think about immersive content.
Looking ahead, Meta and Stanford researchers are showing off progress toward ultra-thin, holographic displays using synthetic aperture waveguides — technology that could eventually power much sleeker AR glasses. In more immediate updates, Meta Avatars are gaining deeper body and face customization options, plus an AI-powered outfit assistant. And over in the rhythm game world, Beat Saber adds Sabrina Carpenter’s viral hit Espresso to its growing tracklist.
Finally, Sharp has announced it's working on a hybrid VR glove controller, combining haptics and motion tracking — hinting at more immersive input options just over the horizon.
