Or if you prefer, first and second battle against Heiss, depending on whether you count the short solo battle against him early on in the game as the proper first encounter.

Heiss is the game's true villain (really easy to see coming as soon as you begin playing, or at least it was that way for me) and as a boss he doesn't disappoint. His offence is dangerously strong and he comes accompanied by shadows (only one in the case of the final fight against him) which complicates the first turns a little bit.

The first encounter happens in Alternative History, final chapter, and his minions are two floating stones. Those have powerful magic (they can target the whole party with it sometimes, too) and should be removed from the battle as soon as possible. Two pushes into a star trap is sufficient to take them out, sometimes even one.

The beginning is quite hard with more enemies on the field, so turn break should be used wisely to ensure nobody is KO'd at this stage. Raynie is tactically inferior to Marco in this fight; however, she is very close to learning G-Fire right now so she prefers getting more exp from being in the active party, plus she can more or less replicate what Marco can do with items (besides pushing, trans-turning and comboing... which is a lot, yeah). A turn break is also useful when Heiss gets two turns in a row, which could be devastating.

Two items can be stolen from Heiss - King Stud, the best of the defences-upping items in the game, and a Shield Seed Plus. Both are definitely worth the time trying to steal them. The battle was overall shorter than I had expected, probably because there are no reinforcements and the boss doesn't occupy the whole grid.

I don't change my setup much in the next (and last) battle vs. Heiss. There is a slight danger of being status'd in this one but it's not reason enough to abandon defensive equipment (especially considering how 3 Sky Drops are insufficient to grant 100% status immunity).

Heiss can be quite a monster now, spamming Dark World for harsh magical damage to everyone, and he also has one ridiculous multi-hit attack which is a sure KO despite coming from the back row, even on a healthy bloke like Stocke. He has no steals for us anymore, so this is an even shorter battle.

Once again, we don't want him getting two turns in a row, otherwise there's a very likely risk of a game over because his offensive capabilities are inhuman in this battle (Viola's are a joke compared to his, but that battle was hard for other reasons). The quicker it's over, the safer.

I also gotta love the AI in the second battle... If it decides to drain HP and/or deal MP damage instead of actually wearing the party out with the strongest attacks in Heiss's arsenal, things are so much easier.
