Touhou Chemblem - Low Turn Run: Chapter 2
The second chapter is where all the fun begins. Our party doubles in size, with the addition of Youmu, the Prismriver sisters, Sunny Milk, Luna Child and Reisen, plus Mokou is recruited by Chen on this map. Somebody needs to go, and I choose Yuuka as the weakest link. Since one healer is more than enough for this map (I can't say I don't need any more healing here, but the healers aren't mobile enough to provide healing to the frontline attackers), I don't really need Lily White either.
This is one of the first maps where the number of turns in which we can clear the chapter depends on Chen's movement. Counting squares to see in how many turns the map can be completed both theoretically and realistically becomes very important. One problem is recruiting Mokou on the way, because when Chen is in her range she will get attacked and therefore have to stop for a turn in order to talk to her. Reisen can talk to Mokou too, but she's not recruited as a result. It doesn't seem like a good idea to do it, but the new Cleric, Luna Child, needs to survive one turn against Mokou, so that Chen can recruit her on the second turn. Chen can then continue running towards the seize point.
Reisen will be persecuted by four enemies at once from the east. Funnily enough, Yuyuko can solo them all on her own by luring them into the forest where flight means she suffers no movement penalties and can choose how many of them she wants to engage in combat simultaneously during each turn. When I get too pre-occupied with seizing on time (my attacks need to connect), I forget to take out the Archer, which, as it later turned on, makes a world of difference determining if Yuyuko can wield a Horseslayer in 2 maps. It's not such a big deal, though.
Medicine grew a whole lot in the previous two maps, so it's a good idea to snowball her growth and keep putting her into the range of several enemies at once. You may notice I'm usually attacking with lances as opposed to swords, even when facing axe fighters. This is because the weapon triangle is weak in this game, not affecting the damage and only giving +5 or -5 accuracy. Another reason is that focusing on lances allows Medicine to equip a Javelin just as soon as she approaches the two Archers blocking the path.
I was really risking it there, as Medicine needed 2 inaccurate Javelins to connect on a soldier (who would otherwise attack her on enemy phase) while at the same time being in 2HKO range to the Archers who were about to attack. But I was lucky.
The village is really not worth visiting as all we get from it is a Vulnerary.
The boss can be defeated without luring any of the Steel Axe fighters, who have enough attack to 2HKO anyone who isn't Youmu, Mokou or Medicine at full health, but I equip a sword (to lower the chances the axes connect) and try to fight them for experience anyway. The more experience we can get at this point, the better, as there are no ready-made prepromotes to solo the game for us - we need to choose the really talented low-levelled growth characters and focus on growing them to get low turn clears later on.
There's really not enough space to discuss every character that joins but let's focus on the best one:
Reisen 2/0 Cavalier
18 HP, 6 str, 7 speed, 6 def, 1 res, E swords & D lances (joins with a Steel Lance and an Iron Sword)
In comparison to 1/0 Medicine, she gets -2 HP, -1 str, -2 speed, but an extra point of resistance. You might deduce she's inferior until you see those growths: 90% HP, 45% strength, 75% skill, 50% speed, 55% luck, 45% defence and like 1% resist (better than zero I guess). It can not be emphasised more: FOURTY FIVE PERCENT DEFENCE GROWTHS! If you level her a lot, she'll turn out bulkier than any armour knight except also doubling everything and having far better movement. Depending on how soon her defence becomes really solid, she may take anywhere up to 10 chapters to become good in a fast-paced playthrough like this, but training her is more than worth it. Her caps are very good (25 speed) and better than Dracoknights' so we want her to get as much out of her level-ups as possible for long-term use. Best combat unit in the game.
As for the rest... Youmu and Mokou are very similar, C swords (instant access to Swordslayer and Armorslayer), fast and okay strength. Prismriver Sisters are fine, and the one with C axes and the best base speed is the only one we'll ever use. Sunny Milk comes with C staves and Warp, meaning we can start warpskipping chapters. If Chen recruits on turn 2, we can Warp Mokou to the forest near the boss, have her kill him with a Killing Edge crit on the next turn and then warping Chen to seize. If we keep playing like that, we'll run out of Warp (which we don't get more of until endgame) and our party will be too weak to take on any of the enemies so it's a really bad idea. But still, a 3-turn clear is possible.
Cleared in: 7 turns.
MVP: Medicine
