Is my body ready to face the Kimono girls? y/n YES IT IS READY

In the original G/S/C, facing the five Kimono girls was necessary to get the Surf HM, and they were pretty easy - Sudowoodo could take care of most of them without any trouble. This time, you get Surf for free, but you have to face all five of them before you could advance the story after the first 8 gyms. Their eeveelutions are very highly-levelled, especially if compared to the other trainers you face around this time in the game, and their movesets are also a lot more respectable.

I went to explore the area of Mt Mortar available after being able to use Waterfall outside of battle, and caught some higher-levelled pokes there, because Gyarados couldn't handle some of the eevee forms on its own. Machoke, Graveler and Raticate are all very useful.

We face them all five in a row without a chance to heal, which kinda sucks seeing how there is no single starter Pokemon that can take all of them on, so I put Gyarados with an Amulet Coin in the lead since it's so easy to get a bit richer here by just doubling the money earned. I then switch out depending on whom I'm facing.

Machoke fares well against Umbreon, who is the same tank as always, plus it can tank Dark Pulses due to its fighting typing. I wish Machoke had Guts instead of No Guard but both Machokes I caught in Mt Mortar had No Guard and I couldn't be arsed to go all the way back and hunt for more - at this point it's too likely that I end up failing to evolve Graveler/Machoke before the E4 (I've tried all programs by now, and none of them help to replicate the effect of trade evolutions) so I might as well not bother and get a Heracross instead, or something. A good use for Machamp would be its access to the three elemental punches (and there's at least one Pokemon in the E4 that's 4x weak against either of the three elements).

Anyway, Machoke needs a Persim Berry so that it has better chances to connect its attacks without killing itself in confusion. If Umbreon gets a Shadow Ball special defence fall (unlikely), we probably have to switch out. Vital Throw hits harder on the turns we expect Confuse Ray to be used, otherwise Revenge all the way (120 BP not counting STAB on countered turns).

Espeon is next and he's tricky as usual, with that powerful Psychic of his. Gyarados can't take it at all, so I bring in a poisoned Guts Raticate with Choice Scarf (gotta love mom's shopping in this game) and Crunch. In a combination with Gyarados's Bite/Waterfall (same damage), depending on whether the attacks role high, we may kill Espeon in two hits, but not necessarily (in which case, some low-level switches-in could be sacrificed while Gyarados's health is restored). Looking back, Blackglasses + Sucker Punch would've ensured Espeon's death, but I actually neglected to get Blackglasses in Dark Cave until now. Might be a good idea to go there before the E4.

Flareon is easy, though Will-O-Wisp burns are annoying when Waterfall is a physical attack, and Fire Blast still kinda hurts.

Jolteon can't do anything against Graveler besides evasion stalling. It's only a matter of time until it dies.

Vaporeon is about as tanky as Umbreon, except with a better defensive typing - no good grass/electric attackers at this point of the challenge. I try to paralyse it with Poliwrath with the ultimate goal of blowing up Graveler into its face to end this sooner (Gyarados can tank it forever with its typing, but the strongest attack it has against it is Bite so it has problems dealing some good damage back too), but Poliwrath somehow miraculously survives for way longer than expected and nearly wins it on its own thanks to para hax.

Oh look, mum called, gotta go.
