Radiant Historia - Low Level Part 19: Hugo Boss
One of the game's villains, Hugo. I was surprised how infuriatingly annoying doing this battle was, especially after I was sure it would be easy after Viola. It was not.
First of all, it's difficult to determine what exactly the best strategy for a low level party would be here. Hugo summons reinforcements (two each time) whenever he is alone, and does so at the start of the battle before we can do anything (low level = too slow to go first even in random battles).
The reinforcements are annoying. They inflict negative statuses (I bought 9 Sky Drops before the battle to give +6 protection to every status to everyone, but ended up swapping some of Aht's equipment in favour of a more magic-offence-based setup), they call for more reinforcements, but the nastiest thing they have is Anti-Magic which makes magic deal zero damage for a significant number of turns. Not being able to damage Hugo by pushing him into traps means having to spend a lot of turns just waiting out for Anti-Magic to wear out. Not fun.
Hugo is also surprisingly bulky, as it seems that he laughs at us even after being pushed like 6 or so times. Besides paralyse abuse (it can still connect without Polaris help even with 3x Sky Drops on everybody) and a regular physical, Hugo also has a double attack which kills Aht at max HP (losing Aht is horrible because all the traps she had set up disappear as well), and can kill Raynie if she's not at max HP. Regenerate is a good idea here. Hugo also likes using MT magic on the party when his health is low, and if any of his soldiers happen to move exactly after him, people will be dying (Stocke not so much though).
We also want to steal his expensive ring which could be used for buying a lot more good stuff for endgame (like stat boosters or healing items). This is surprisingly hard, which is why I have both Stocke and Aht steal from him as opposed to pushing two soldiers together and then assaulting them into a trap (this needs 3 characters to move one after another). I have had very bad luck on most attempts with getting the steal to work, so I first check if I can steal and only then f-i-g-h-t it out. If Steal fails to connect, Anti-Magic will be used before we are able to do anything.
And that's that for Hugo. Can't say I felt much compassion for him, unlike some of the other enemies in the game.
