Repton 3 Encore Level 4
0Some shortcuts on Repton levels arise from clever manoeuvres the designers had no reason to take into account; others are just Gordian knots waiting to be cut. This is one of the latter kind. The orthodox solution to the puzzle of getting the lowest spirit into its cage is to make your way to the key first, which involves dropping a few rocks one at a time and shunting each aside so as to leave the bottom passage open, and then dealing with the monster from the egg on the safe afterwards. So much simpler to just let the spirit out by pushing this egg.
Even with this shortcut being rather easy to see, I consider this level to be an abrupt difficulty spike on a par with Future 4, most particularly as the sequence of moves necessary to release the top-right spirit is not easy to work out. For anyone using this video as a walkthrough, note that when you push the rock to let the spirit into the top centre area, the spirit must be in the upper half of the skull maze; this happens automatically if my route is followed as fast as possible, but not necessarily otherwise.
The overall result is an improvement of 22 seconds on my previous best -- the last second being saved when making the video, as I was lucky enough to see the fungus expand a little and shorten the last spirit's journey.
The music for this video is the overture to Georges Bizet's Carmen. The first minute of this piece was used as the music in the PC version of Repton 2.
