Condemned: Criminal Origins (2006) (PC) (Monolith Productions)
Many shooter fans hold Monolith in high esteem, but I've honestly never been that impressed by their games. Blood was certainly an important Duke 3D-era shooter...but their other supposed classics such as Shogo, No One Lives Forever, Aliens vs Predator 2 and FEAR are all more competent than great in my opinion. The slick 60's nostalgia of NOFL and over-the-top anime self-parodies of Shogo deserve the most praise for being such brave departures from conventional shooter norms in stylistic terms, but when it comes to the actual gameplay I can hardly remember a single level from either NOLF1 or NOLF2. And Shogo, well, let's just say that game hasn't aged particularly well.
Condemned: Criminal Origins was a shooter/beat em up hybrid I thought about buying when it came out four years ago but ultimately I decided against it since I'm rather sick of the gory nonsense which counts for "psychological" horror in movies and games these days. When Direct2Drive had a sale some time ago and practically gave the game away for two or three Euros I nonetheless decided to pick it up but I haven't tried it out until now.
