This video comprises sixteen demos, mostly in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters, items and secrets from a pistol start on Scythe's Map 17 'Book Lords' without taking any damage, whatsoever, a.k.a. No Damage Completion. The challenge is taken on cautiously at first but is then speedran, culminating in a new UV Max + Reality + Items World Record. There is commentary throughout the video, most of it recorded live as I streamed my attempts on Twitch.
Scythe is a popular 32-map vanilla-compatible megawad released by Erik Alm and Kim 'Torn' Bach in 2003 and can be downloaded for free from: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/scythe
Speedrunning records are maintained by the DSDA (Doom Speed Demos Archive) at: https://dsdarchive.com/wads/scythe?level=Map 17

This level has no hitscanners at all, so, when taken on carefully and with good foreknowledge of the teleport ambushes, it is quite easy for No Damage play. However, I managed to screw up pretty badly at this and the embarrassing results are included in the first half of the video.
Speedrunning makes any No Damage challenge difficult because I am constantly looking for ways to cut corners and get away with it. The linearity of the map meant there wasn't much variation possible in the order I went, except that it is often alluring to activate enemies and run away. However, this can end up wasting time, what with having to round up the stragglers before exiting.
Erik Alm allows the player to cheese traps quite often by opening and closing doors, otherwise the final horde of enemies released would be very intimidating!
The eagle-eyed viewer may notice that the attempt numbers at the top left of the screen during the live stream don't quite match the official attempt numbers I added to the video afterwards. That's because when I rename a successful demo to distinguish it from the others, DSDA Doom thinks that attempt number hasn't been written yet, and re-issues it instead of incrementing the attempt counter by one. In future, I will copy successful demos to another folder before renaming them.
I'd love it if you could join me on stream -- I'll be showing what Decino could have done better on Map 01 of Sunder -- Python, on Wednesday 23rd November 2022.
