Session 1: Float to the Past (Final Fantasy Legend III)
Going from playing a Mario platformer to playing a handheld RPG like this is quite the drastic change, but I've been meaning to beat this game for a while. You see, I had this game when I was a kid, and got as far as the final dungeon before getting distracted by another game (the main reason half the games I own are unbeaten). Then I got rid of it, then I got it again, then I got rid of it again, and now here I am with my third copy. And this time, I intend to beat the game. This longplay will help ensure that. (By the way, thanks to Russ and Dave for selling their copy.)
Personally, I think FFL3 was the best RPG on the Game Boy, up until Pokémon came around in the late 90s. Granted, it's not without its flaws. You are essentially playing an NES-style RPG. There's gonna be a lot of random encounters, and the dungeons tend to be nothing special. What IS special about this game is that you can eat monster meat and install robot parts to transform into different creatures. It's a feature I've never completely understood, as certain transformations make me seem weaker, and they come with special attacks that generally aren't worth using. But it's fun to turn into different things like that.
Speaking of not understanding, I can't understand why equipping new weapons doesn't show a change in your attack power. Maybe it's a glitch, or maybe it's some cryptic deal where certain weapons are best used with certain character types. Maybe someday I'll play through again with a guide. For now, though, I'm on my own.
Also, if you're a fan of FFL1 and/or 2, then this game will be very different. The first two games didn't have traditional level ups. You grew based on your actions in battle. Also, your weapons broke in the first two games. Neither of those are features I enjoy, so I'm really glad that this entry went more towards the format that the main Final Fantasy series use. Even if fans of the FFL series consider this one the black sheep for that very reason.
By the way, one annoying detail about this game is that the text is always auto-scrolling. It will not stop at each page, but instead keep on going. And unless you hold the A button, it will go at a painfully slow rate. So I have to tap the A button a lot in order to read the text at a decent rate. Occasionally, this results in me missing a word or two of dialogue, so I hope you'll forgive me for that.
