Session 1: Yoshis, Donuts, and a Hint of Vanilla (Super Mario World)
0I didn't own a Super Nintendo until after the Nintendo 64 came out. Thankfully, my grandpa had one since year one, with this copy of Super Mario World. I remember the first time I played it. I was used to NES Mario's A for jump and B for run. So naturally, this game's second jump button resulted me in doing a lot of spin jumps intead of regular jumps. At least until I got used to how to hold the controller, which is now why I always swap the controls when playing on my Super Game Boy.
Another memory? The first sighting of Big Boo. Now, I hadn't yet figured out how to find secret exits, so I didn't see the one in the Donut Secret House. My first encounter was in Vanilla Ghost House. And when I first saw him, I had to pause the game to show everyone this freakishly huge thing.
Anyway, this game has a total of 70-some-odd levels, a couple dozen of which have alternate exits. Those looking to become perfectionists will want to find 96 exits altogether. For this playthrough, I decided to tag-team with both Mario and Luigi. Mario is handling the secret exits, while Luigi is clearing a path through the main game. Also, I'll be trudging through Star World gradually as I travel around the map.
Late in this video, you'll note that I returned to the beginning of Donut Secret 2. When I was a kid, I found this glitch where you could aquire a key in the first ? block, even though the level only has one exit. I was pretty good at getting that key, but it's been so many years, I can't remember how I did it. I'd imagine none of you want to see me start the level over and over again, and it's a complete waste of bandwidth, so I decided I should cut out those ten minutes of nothing.
Also, it kills me that I failed to take advantage of the bonus room of Donut Secret 1. XD
