Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 316 . Lost Valley Redoubt
Before we can continue any further in the Dark Brotherhood questline, we have a problem we need to address - we are out of locations to store the soul gems of our victims. If you're new or don't recall, we're soul trapping every kill we make as part of the Dark Brotherhood. The issue here is that I like to keep the soul gems separate, so I can definitively say that such and such soul gem contains the soul of X person. If you put them all in the same container they all group together and you can't know which is which anymore, so we've been storing one gem per container throughout all our houses. But despite owning three houses, we're out of new containers.
So our goal now is to become Thane of a new hold so we can get another house. We have effectively four options: the Reach, Hjaallmarch, the Pale, and Riften. Eastmarch isn't a realistic option as we'll need to finish the entire Civil War questline before we can become Thane there. As for the others, becoming the Thane of Hjaalmarch, the Pale, or Riften would all require completing quest content where we need to soul trap yet more named victims for our collection. Therefore we're going to go with the Reach, as all we have to do for it is complete a miscellaneous quest to retrieve Igmund's father's shield from a Forsworn camp.
The downside is that the radiant location we got for this quest is Lost Valley Redoubt, a rather sizeable Forsworn camp in the southeastern Reach where it borders Falkreath. Still, getting to do a little semi-random exploration will provide a nice break from the kind of content we've been doing lately.
We've actually visited this location before, although we didn't explore or clear it. You have to go through it to get to Bard's Leap Summit, where we obtained two free Speech levels by jumping off and speaking to the ghost of the bard Azzadal. Unfortunately that means all the scripted dialogue you can encounter from the Forsworn has already played, such as the ritual where the hagravens raise a new Briarheart.
The Valley is a pretty cool location. It's completely outdoors and consists of a valley sitting high in the mountains that contains several Nordic aqueducts that funnel water into several massive waterfalls that spill down the cliffs into the river at the bottom. We start at the bottom, which is coincidentally the location of the chest for Treasure Map V, so we loot it before proceeding up. We've brought Serana along to make sure we can carry everything, but we leave her at the foot of the stairs for now, as we're going to stealth-kill all the Forsworn.
We arrive at night, which is perfect for killing, but not for looting, so we decide to pacify the valley first on our way up, and hopefully by the time we're done it will be morning and we can explore everything on our way back down. While Forsworn can be nasty customers, they're spaced few and far between on the various levels we have to ascend, so they generally go down very easily. The ascent culminates at a Word Wall at the top of the valley where two hagravens are performing the ritual to raise a new Briarheart. We already learned the Word here when we came to visit Bard's Leap Summit, but there's still a boss chest here to loot.
The last location to clear out here is Cradle Stone Tower, a small tower that sits at the edge of the valley where it looks over the rest of the Reach to the west. A single hagraven is the last living foe we dispatch, and the Valley is now ours. It's still not quite morning, so we wait a few hours for the sunrise so we can begin exploring everything on our way down. We don't want to miss any loot, ingredients, or ores just because it was dark out.
After clearing the place out we head home for a sort n' sell. Next time we'll head back to Markarth to claim our new thaneship and our new house.
