Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis, Saturn, PC) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Released in 1996 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (with a Saturn and PC port coming out sometime later), Sonic 3D Blast (or Sonic 3D: Flicky's Island) is an isometric 3D platformer. The game revolves around Sega's blue blur Sonic the Hedgehog on a journey to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from doing evil stuff and imprisoning these neat little birds named Flickies on his quest to conquer the world.
Having originally garnered some middling reviews, many view Sonic 3D Blast as one of the franchise's first missteps that, soundtrack aside, isn't necessarily worth revisiting.
But does it hold up?
Well, not really. I mean, I said it in the preceding paragraph, didn't I? However, while the game may not be the hoot that it's other Genesis counterparts are, I do think that there's actually quite a bit to love about this game. Sure, it's got some glaring issues, but I also happen to enjoy its art style, music, and even some of the aspects of it's gameplay too. It's flawed and hasn't particularly aged well, yes, but it's still got it's charm, I guess.
