Psychonauts (Xbox) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
31Originally released for Microsoft's Xbox in 2005, before getting ported to the Playstation 2, PC and PS4, Psychonauts is a 3D platformer that follows its main character Raz's journey to become a psychic spy. Despite positive reviews, the game was never a strong seller and took several years to earn it's current cult status. Psychonauts is often looked at as one of the best 3D platformers available for the Xbox and, as such, received two sequels which were known as Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, and the upcoming Psychonauts 2.
But... Does it hold up?
Yes! Despite some issues in how it guides the player through the adventure, Psychonauts manages to provide and entertaining and thrilling experience for fans of the platforming genre. It may be feel a bit dated at points, but the game itself is a solid and extremely memorable, thanks to its fun story, incredible art style, and wonderful soundtrack. I genuinely had a blast playing through this game, to the point of picking up a physical copy immediately after completing my playthrough on Steam, and can't recommend this game enough to anyone looking for a good platformer that either has a few bucks to spend on a digital copy, or has Game Pass/Game Pass Ultimate.
