Paper Mario (Nintendo 64) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Paper Mario (aka 'Mario Story' in Japan) is an RPG that was developed by Intelligent Systems and released for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. Originally conceived as a sequel to the Squaresoft (now known as Square Enix) SNES/Super Famicom game "Super Mario RPG," it follows in that game's blueprint of providing roleplaying action to players who may be a little less familiar with the genre and it's various trappings. The game follows Mario on a journey to rescue several imprisoned Star Spirits in the hopes of using their power to defeat Bowser and his powerful new weapon the Star Rod so that he can rescue Princess Peach and... drop her castle out of the sky? I'm kinda shaky on that part, to be honest.
Paper Mario is a shining example of how to make turn-based RPG gameplay more appealing to RPG newcomers. Thanks to its take on combat, its light tone, and its amazing paper aesthetic, the game stands as one of my favorite Mario games, as well as one of my favorite RPGs.
But does it hold up? Well, yeah. I think the preceding paragraph made that pretty clear, didn't it? Paper Mario is a really fun game that I had a blast running through for this latest video! If you haven't played through this game before, I can't recommend it enough and strongly suggest checking it out! Paper Mario is available on the Nintendo 64, the iQue Player (if you're one of the three people who own one), the Wii/Wii U's Virtual Consoles and is slated to be added to Nintendo Switch Online's Expansion Pack.
