Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Playstation) made me love Metroidvanias - Retro Game Review
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is S-tier Metroidvania goodness. Released in 1997 for the Sony Playstation, SotN (also known as "Akumajō Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight" in Japan) is a 2D action-adventure game that follows Dracula's son Alucard on a journey through his father's castle after its reemergence following the events of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. The game has also been released on the Sega Saturn, Xbox 360/One/Series S/Series X, the PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5, the PSP, as well as on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android.
Symphony of the Night marks a shift in Castlevania's iconic 2D action gameplay, developing ideas first explored in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and expanding them into a highly polished gameplay experience that, despite weak initial sales, quickly grew to become one of the Playstation's most beloved cult hits.
In this inaugural episode of "One Playthrough Later," I explore the beloved Metroidvania and share my thoughts/opinions on it, as well as try to explore why it took me so long to play through this game to begin with.
