Donkey Kong Land (Game Boy) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
60Released in 1995 for the ol' DMG-01 (the Game Boy), Donkey Kong Land is a 2D side scrolling platformer. The game was developed by Rare and serves as the first continuation of the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES/Super Famicom. Despite running on inferior hardware, DKL is an impressive game thanks to its attempt to adapt its console-counterpart's visuals and gameplay to Nintendo's 8-bit handheld.
But does it hold up?
Well, not quite. While the game is fun and features over 30 new levels of DKC action, the game ultimately suffers due to its existence as a Game Boy conversion of a title that was just a bit too complex for the hardware. Despite the fact that I enjoyed the game's music and level designs, its busy visuals make for a game that's hard to interpret and make sense of on modern displays, let alone the Game Boy's original unbacklit screen.
Still, even though this game doesn't quite stand the test of time, it is ultimately a good game and may be worth checking out if you're a fan of the franchise in search of a good, relatively short, platformer.
