Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension (SNES) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension is a 1992 platformer that was original released on the Commodore Amiga CD32, before getting ported to a variety of other consoles that include the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Boy, DOS, Atari ST, Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear. The game follows its titular character on a journey to become a ninja and served as a defacto mascot for the Amiga (in no small part due to the character being positioned as direct competition for the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and other 90s mascot platformers spawned in the wake of it) and, as such, has garnered a bit of a reputation/cult status over the years.
But... Does it hold up?
While some may look back at Zool rather fondly, I honestly struggled to get into this game due to issues I found in its collect-a-thon-esque structure, it's busy and hard to read visual design, and controls/physics that felt a little unrefined. Still, I do see how players back in the 90s could have fallen in love with the character and would want to revisit his inaugural adventure again sometime in the future. To fans of the character/franchise, I offer my apologies if parts of this review come across as a little overly negative. While I didn't particularly enjoy the game, I do see its appeal and wish them all the best (especially since Zool recently got a remaster named Zool Redimensioned, which presents the game in a widescreen format that may actually remedy some of the issues I had with the SNES version).
