Splatterhouse (Turbografx-16) Retro Game Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Released in 1988, Splatterhouse is a sidescrolling beat em up that was released in the arcades and ported to the Turbografx 16/PC Engine. Developed by Namco, the game follows a hockey mask-wearing named Rick on a mission to save his girlfriend from a spooky mansion, with nothing but his fists and an assortment of pickups by his side to help him wade through hordes of foes.
Since its release, the game has become a cult classic amongst fans of beat em ups and horror games, having earned a reputation for its violence (which was toned down for the home release) and being one of the earlier examples of a video game depicting such acts in detail.
Over 30 years later... Does it hold up?
Well, yeah! Splatterhouse is still a lot of fun to play and is worth a shot from anyone curious about playing it. However, new players might want to temper their expectations a bit as, 30 years later, the gameplay may not do enough to help the game stand out from other beat em ups from the era.
