Kirby's Adventure (NES) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
45Released in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Kirby's Adventure is a side-scrolling platformer and the second game in the Kirby franchise. Developed by HAL Laboratory, the game is the first console installment in the series and introduced a number of iconic features for the series such as Kirby's copy ability, his rival Meta Knight, and (for US players) his famous pink hue.
The game would go on to receive a remake for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, known as Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which replaced the game's NES graphics with new and updated visuals.
But... Does it hold up?
Almost 30 years later, Kirby's Adventure remains an absolute joy to behold. While the game does suffer from more slowdown than I personally care for, it also stands at the apex of what the NES was capable of and has incredible graphics and sound that, for me, elevate this game above its remake.
If you're a fan of the series, or you're looking to give it a shot before the latest entry in the series, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, comes out in Spring 2022, I can't recommend this game enough. It's available on Nintendo Switch Online, the Nintendo 3DS eShop, and on the Wii U's virtual console (in both it's NES and GBA incarnations).
